Can coffee stunt your growth? Can caffeine have side effects that should worry you? Coffee is the most popular caffeinated beverage that people all over the world enjoy. Coffee lovers are everywhere and drink many pots of drink each day. However, there may be some health hazards that coffee possesses. Though studies are going on to see if there is any truth to it, nothing has come out yet. The effects of coffee, both good and bad, are under numerous studies. Adolescents and kids have a fast bone and muscle growth rate. But, people often say that drinking coffee among growing kids and young adults can lead to stunted growth. Calcium is the main component that promotes bone growth. A study suggested a link between reduced calcium absorption in bones and caffeine intake. However, there was no evidence found to support this fact. Another study took place among two groups of women who drank high and low caffeine intake daily, respectively. However, the rate of bone growth in both did not seem to be affected by their level of caffeine intake.

Although caffeine is not hindering bone growth in kids and young adults, it is associated with other disruptions. Caffeine intake leads to sleep disruption in kids and young adults. It gives one the energy to keep going for longer but also makes you feel sleepless and stay up longer. Hence, you might feel sleepy during school or college and feel tired through other activities in the day.

Also, coffee has a large amount of added sugar. Consuming too much coffee with added sugar can increase blood sugar levels. Not just in kids, this is a problem in adults. So one should check the amount of sugar you are consuming with your beverage.

If you have any doubts about coffee leading to low calcium absorption, taking some milk you’re your coffee can quickly fix this. The high content of caffeine can help give you more energy. However, there are other benefits of coffee as well. It also helps in reducing Alzheimer’s disease. 

Coffee is also known to reduce weight. It contains Chlorogenic acid, which has antioxidant properties and protects cell damage. Further, it includes Trigonelline, which suggested lowering blood sugar levels among mice in a study. Diterpenes, another component in coffee seems to have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. People with a cold often feel better when they drink coffee.

Many studies show that coffee may lead to lower risks of many diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes, and even kidney diseases.

However, it must be kept in mind that women who are pregnant or are trying to be, need to limit their caffeine intake per day. That is because caffeine may be associated with higher miscarriage rates and lower birth weight.

The fact that coffee can stunt bone growth is probably a myth since it has no proof. Moreover, it has several positive effects. However, it does not mean we should drink vast amounts of coffee regularly.
